A MAZE International Independent Videogames Festival

International Games Week Berlin

Location > Urban Spree, Revaler Straße 99, 10245 Berlin, Germany
Festival opening > 6pm-1am, April 22, 2015
Duration > April 22 to 24, 2015

The installation is a result of a collaboration between Karina Smigla-Bobinski, Tatiana Vilela and Kati Hyyppä while “The Brain – Open Lab”, a temporary creative work and exchange hub in Berlin for digital artists, game creators and forward thinkers. It was initiated and funded by the Polish Institute Berlin and the Institut Français Germany in partnership with A MAZE. The keywords for the project are human brains, digital/virtual networks, rational and emotional memories, collective intellegence, perception, digital archives and open knowledge. Curated by Thorsten S Wiedemann, festival director of A MAZE.

The inspiration: mental map (brain GPS) by John O'Keefe and May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser.
How do we know where we are? How can we find the way from one place to another? And how can we store this information in such a way that we can immediately find the way the next time we trace the same path? This Nobel Laureates have discovered a positioning system, an "inner GPS" in the brain that makes it possible to orient ourselves in space, demonstrating a cellular basis for higher cognitive function.

On the project blog: you can find a photo documentation of the whole development process.

The prototype of the installation was presented for the first time to the public on big finissage on March 19 at the gallery Polnisches Institut Berlin.

The controllers navigate the balls and the touched sticks light up. When the Goals (red or blue) are completed, the whole field lights up in the color of the "winner team".
